What the Crowd Heard
Have you ever walked out of a lecture with a completely different understanding than the person sitting next to you? Later you meet at a coffee shop, pull out your notes, and start comparing. That’s when you realize you both heard exactly the same words, but you understood them on completely different planes.
That’s what happened in the streets of Philippi.
A slave girl is proclaiming: "These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation." When I first read what she said, my reaction was: What’s wrong with that? It sounded true. It sounded like free advertising. It turns out there’s a lot wrong with what she said. Not in the words themselves, but in what the crowd heard.
This happens in Acts 16, a slave girl with a python spirit chased Paul and his companions through the city for days, crying out that they were servants of the Most High God who proclaimed the way of salvation. Eventually Paul had had enough. He turned around and cast out what he recognized as a demon.
In this episode we stand in that Macedonian marketplace and listen the way Philippi listened. We look at who the locals thought “the Most High God” was, at one tiny word missing from the Greek, and at why the same kind of statement, spoken in Singapore in 2024, should make every Christian stop and listen twice.
Same words. Completely different message. Which one are you hearing?
