The Psychology of Now
I used to think I had it all figured out. I dug into some articles I’d written in the past. They came up as I was approaching the subject matter of this podcast. In the last episode we looked the entropic decay of the natural man.
In "The Science of God's Economy," we followed the laws of thermodynamics as a picture of the gospel. Left to itself, every closed system runs down. Order requires an outside source. Nothing simply vanishes, so sin must be borne by someone. The universe cannot save itself, and neither can we.
This podcast picks up where that one ended, with a question the physics raises but cannot answer: what happens inside a person after the outside source has acted?
A person who has been born again lives with something like a split personality. Scripture names the two sides. There is the old self, the self that came down from Adam, and there is the new self, "created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:24). The believer is not simply a better version of who he used to be. He is a new creation, "the old has passed away; behold, the new has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17). Yet anyone who has walked with Christ for more than a week knows the old patterns did not vanish overnight.
