The Messiah That The Jews Missed
This podcast follows the character in a Short Story - The Sure Mercies by Greg Newell. That story is a modern dramatic version of the same argument Paul gave in the synagogue in Athens. These are the scriptural basis for that short story. Additional notes are also provided for this Podcast.
The argument Paul Adler makes in this story is not invented. It is derived entirely from the Hebrew scriptures.
The reader is encouraged to read those scriptures first, on their own terms, before reading anything else about them.
The passages are these:
2 Samuel 7:12–16 — God's covenant with David: an eternal house, kingdom, and throne.
Psalm 89:28–29 — The covenant confirmed: the seed of David shall endure forever, his throne as the days of heaven.
Isaiah 55:3 — The everlasting covenant extended to all who will hear: the sure mercies of David.
Psalm 16:10 — David's declaration: the Holy One of God will not see corruption.
Read them in order. Sit with the logic they create. Ask what the covenant requires of death. Ask who the Holy One is, if not David.
For those who wish to see how this argument was made in full — to a synagogue audience, from these same scriptures, in the first century — the account can be found in Acts 13:16–41. It has not changed. The argument is the same. Only the city is different.
The sure mercies are sure because the One who secured them is alive to secure them.
