The Deceitful Oath

When I approached today's research I was prepared for a long length deep dive. What I encounter instead was a system so brazen in its affront to everything God commanded that I was not only stunned but found myself at a loss relative to going deeper.

You don't need to go deep on this one. Sometimes, when Jesus is talking to the Pharisees and calling out their hypocrisy, you have to dig a little to understand the nuances of what the Jews did with regards to all their rules. But most of the time, it made some sort of sense. The rule was to keep you away from even the remotest possibility of breaching God's commandments.

But this! God said two things:

1. Do not bear false witness
2. Oaths had a special oomph. You had to keep them

So, what did the Jewish religious elite do? They came up with breakable oaths. Not to God. Not to even things that touched God. The invented a system they thought allowed a person to lie without breaching the commandments of God. They created a system of deceitful oaths.
