Letter to Laodicea - Convicting the Complacent
I'm a pretty black and white kind of person. This letter speaks to me. Have you ever talked with someone who is so careful in his words, so as not to offend anyone, that his entire message gets diluted in his desire to be neutral? That kind of person never sits right with me, you never really know what they think!
I think Jesus is speaking to Laodicea in this very context. They are lukewarm. They hold no real convictions. They are happy, comfortable and complacent. In that culture, they do not want to rock the boat - it might mean that they could be stripped of some of their self-sufficiency - their comfort.
I think we in the west are floating in the same boat! We don't even recognize how well we have it. BUT, beyond just wealth and material possessions, our culture has washed everything down to a diluted average. Say anything and you offend somebody. As we all walk our politically correct straight lines, I think we have to step off, find our clear path in Christ, and speak it boldly. You may offend someone... no... you WILL offend someone. Because today, someone, somewhere is offended by anyone speaking with clear conviction, clear beliefs and even a clear faith that is different from their own.
