Judgement Befalls Jerusalem
After Jesus laments over Jerusalem, the disciples are marveling at the temple. We have two verses of scripture in Matthew 24 (verses 1-2) that somehow still find their way into prophecies yet to be fulfilled. The Roman siege of Jerusalem in 70AD is about as brutal as judgement gets and still this part of the Bible has been misinterpreted by many to be something yet to happen. We don't make that mistake.
I don't think there's any question. The source presents the prophecy and the history and the backstory leading up to the prophecy. It might surprise some to know that even the Old Testament speaks of this.
In our Red-Letter journey, we just left a scathing rebuke of the Jewish Religious elite and Jesus well knows how that plays out. By this time, he has told his disciples on more than one occasion that they would crucify Him. It must seem almost surreal to them - to connect a prophecy like that to the actual judgement. The apostles would of course live through this judgement, and we have the gospels to account for both the prophetic judgement and what happened in 70AD. We also jump out of Scripture to look at some of the historical literature that documents the siege of Rome.
