"IN" Christ - Trying to Grasp the Concept
When I was a boy, raised Catholic, I would go into the confessional and come out a new kid. My mother loved confession day. We were so good, at least until the ability to resist had worn off.
The instinct behind that experience is biblical. "Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little" (Luke 7:47). Forgiveness received produces love, and love wants to obey. Paul grounds his call to holiness in mercy: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God" (Romans 12:1).
But a feeling of being forgiven, however real, fades. If the Christian life rested on that feeling alone, it would run in a cycle: forgiven, renewed, fading, failing, forgiven again.
We often here the expression “In Christ” and in fact may have heard it so much we forgot to stop and examine the contents. It begs the question, what were you before you were “in Christ”. What is “In Adam”? And how exactly did we inherit “Adamness…”. The Bible even states that I'm not responsible for the sins of my father (Ezekiel 18:20, Deuteronomy 24:16)
In this material by the Berean Teacher, we decided to try to answer some of these questions. I won’t promise that this is the last word on the subject. It is decidedly very heavy material. But I think we can at least shine a light and make you stop and think.
