Cain, Abel and Seth - Enmity, Death & Redemption
Understanding Cain and Abel starts with understanding the motivations to glorify God. Upon first reading, one is often puzzled as to why God rejects Cain's offering. Listen to this deep dive.
Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers...
Genesis 4:3-5 - In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
Hebrews 11:4 - By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.
Genesis 4:8 - Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
Genesis 4:10 - The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.
Genesis 4:15 - But the LORD said to him, “... anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
Genesis 4:25-26 - and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.
1 John 3:13 - Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous
